Jimmy Lewis (bassist)

James "Jimmy" Lewis was a United States bassist who worked with the Count Basie Orchestra and sextet in the 1950s and performed with Duke Ellington, Cootie Williams, Billie Holiday and Ivory Joe Hunter before moving to electric bass during his tenure with King Curtis and later provided the basslines for the musical ''Hair''. Lewis freelanced extensively and performed on many albums by soul and jazz musicians including Horace Silver and the Modern Jazz Quartet up until the late 1980s.〔McClellan, L., ''The Later Swing Era, 1942 to 1955'', Greenwood, 2004, p 245〕 He died in 2000.〔(Associated Musicians of Greater New York: Requiem May 2000 ) accessed November 12, 2014〕
